One in five people who give birth for the first time experience perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), which range from depression and OCD to PTSD and psychosis. For many, talk therapy is the solution. But what happens when that’s not enough?

EMDR, or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, entered the medical scene in the late ‘80s, but the treatment was not always well-known. Thanks to mentions in shows like #GreysAnatomy and praise from celebrities like #PrinceHarry and #SandraBullock, EMDR, which uses eye movement stimulation to affect the way the brain processes information, is rising in popularity—and could be key to treating reproductive health trauma.

“EMDR is like the nudge to our brain to say, ‘Hey, remember, you already know how to process memory,’ “ says @bethanywarrenlcsw, a certified perinatal mental health professional. But there’s one big downside: the cost. At the link in bio, writer Lorena O'Neil reports on the rise of EMDR, and why making it more accessible is essential for those who are healing from reproductive trauma.
