In an essay for HuffPost, guest writer Michelle Stacey recalled her 86-year-old dad deciding it was his time to die — and how she helped him do it the way he wanted.

“He has a horror of hospitals, and most particularly of what he sees as the wasteful and pointless business of prolonging life at all costs. It’s both a moral and a deeply personal stand — so much so that he wrote two books about it,” Stacey said of her father, who was managing both prostate cancer and emphysema at the time.

She knew she had to honor her dad’s wish to die, so she and her stepmom brought in hospice care even though she said everything in her longed for him to stay.
