Rather than succumbing to grim alternatives, I sought help at a mental health facility called @sierra_tucson, where the therapists saved my life and helped me find my lost marbles. I learned incredibly useful information on the subject of Trauma and I’ve shot a video about it, so that other folks who’ve experienced trauma and minimized it to survive (like I did) might not feel so alone, split, embarrassed or broken. There’s *always* help out there, Kids. Don’t be afraid to ask for it. Seek it out. At the other side of the hardest thing you’ll ever go through lies your joy. Don’t waste your time obsessing over the unchangeable past, stop worrying about the unknowable future, and focus on this moment: the here and now. And breathe. Before I left the place that helped me, my therapist wrote these words down on an index card that I will always carry with me for the rest of my days: “You do not have to earn love. You are lovable simply because you exist.” It’s a simple sentiment, true - but one I’ve needed to hear for decades. I hope it brings you as much comfort as it has brought me. I wanna thank @people for helping me get the word out and hosting my mental health video. To watch the 35 minute talk, go to the #peoplemagazine @youtube page. There’s nothing to buy, as I’m not selling anything. But after my heart attack, I’d tell the story about it everywhere - from the @colbertlateshow, to podcasts, to medical convocations. And over the course of the last 5 years, I’ve met and heard from thousands of folks who said that receiving the heart attack information made them look into their own heart health or the heart health of their loved ones - which in turn saved some actual lives. And while some folks experience heart problems, EVERYBODY suffers from trauma. I wish you the absolute best. #KevinSmith」4月26日 23時30分 - thatkevinsmith

Having been a creature of the Internet for 28 years now, I fully expect to get trolled for this. But if it can help some folks, it’ll be worth it. So here goes…

A few months back I went through a mental health crisis.

Seize it - because you deserve happiness in this very short life we’re lucky enough to get. As bad as troubles can get, it can always get better.

Don’t waste your time obsessing over the unchangeable past, stop worrying about the unknowable future, and focus on this moment: the here and now. And breathe.

Before I left the place that helped me, my therapist wrote these words down on an index card that I will always carry with me for the rest of my days:

“You do not have to earn love.
You are lovable simply because you exist.”

It’s a simple sentiment, true - but one I’ve needed to hear for decades. I hope it brings you as much comfort as it has brought me.

I wanna thank @People Magazine for helping me get the word out and hosting my mental health video.
