Nature always inspired Elsa Schiaparelli, and in signature shocking Schiap style, the designer went one step beyond to celebrate it, looking to animals and insects to inspire her creations.
In the years of Surrealism, insects symbolized transformation, growth, and the irrational psyche, allowing artists to express their innermost thoughts and feelings. For Elsa, the Rhodoid Necklace (image 3) she created in 1938 for the Pagan Collection, was a perfect example of her innermost feelings.
This necklace was an avant-garde masterpiece. It was crafted from Rhodoid, a cellulose acetate plastic, and was adorned with colorful metal insects that appeared to elegantly crawl across the wearer's décolleté. The Pagan Collection is an example of Schiaparelli's surreal use of animals and insects that challenge traditional aesthetics of the time while exploring themes of identity and mortality.
Today, from @danielroseberry’s ladybugs of Haute Couture FW 2019 to the crystal-beaded ants of Ready-to-Wear SS 2023, @スキャパレリ continues to inspire and bring familiar creatures to life.
