Ahead of the Met Gala celebrating his work, The Times asked Wintour to pick some of the favorite Lagerfeld designs that still hang in her closet and describe the memories they evoke. Wintour shared a paint box dress she wore to her son’s wedding, a black gown from Lagerfeld’s first Chanel couture collection and a gold suit that was one of his favorites. “Karl told me that my gold trompe l’oeil dress was his favorite on me of any piece I’d worn,” she told chief fashion critic @vvfriedman. “Since then, I’ve worn it many times.” Lagerfeld was one of Wintour’s closest friends for decades. He created clothing that she wore for her own wedding, Met Galas, state dinners and tennis championships.
