She taught me that you don’t have to have much to make a difference in people’s lives so I’ve always been someone that got great joy in being able to help someone make their dreams come true. My studio can point to thousands of examples. However, what my mother failed to mention was that a lot of times people will not show gratitude, or appreciation not even say thank you. Let’s be clear, I’ve never done anything to help someone expecting anything in return but like any human, it’s good to know that someone appreciates what you’ve done, so ungrateful people have lead to me having many bouts with compassion fatigue. With that said, out of all the things I’ve done to help people some you know, most you don’t (I wouldn’t even mention this had he not gone public and given me permission to), this young man has made me want to keep on giving and helping, he didn’t let anything stop him. He put himself through college by working as a sanitation worker, sometimes even coming to school after work with no chance to change or shower, looked down on by many but very encouraged by his fellow sanitation workers. He not only graduated but got accepted into Harvard Law School. One day he said hi to a custodian at Harvard and she thought she misheard. She said, I’m sorry, I didn’t think you were talking to me, none of the students every talk to me. It moved him like his story moved me and just as I helped him, he started an initiative and raised over 70 thousand dollars to help the people that most don’t even see. Rehan, you are truly my hero and I couldn’t be more proud of you even if you were my own son. I see people who have way more opportunity and privilege but you put them all to shame. Way to go kid!
