It is estimated only 19% of all rapes are reported. That means that probably well over 3.8 million women were raped in the US last year. Nearly 1 in 2 women have experienced rape, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. In the age range 14-25 this rises to 97% of women reporting having been sexually assaulted. In 8 out of 10 rape cases, the victim knew the perpetrator. Trans women, disabled women and BIPOC women are twice as likely to be assaulted. Only about 5% of rapes reported to the police lead to an arrest. 97.5% of all sexual assault perpetrators arrested walk free. Approximately 70 women commit suicide every day in the US following an act of sexual violence. It costs around $10 to educate a young person about consent. The Schools Consent Project is a charity sending lawyers into schools, to teach 11-18 year olds the legal definition of consent and certain sexual offences (sexual assault, rape, 'sexting, etc). We have educated over 35,000 young people about consent.
