May 5 is Kodomo no Hi or "Children’s Day" a National Holiday in Japan and the final celebration of the Golden Week. It is a day set aside to respect children's personalities and to celebrate their happiness. Families fly koinobori banners in the shape of a carp or koi for each child in their house , which look as if they are swimming when they flutter in the breeze. In Japanese folklore, the carp is a symbol of determination and vigor, overcoming all obstacles to swim upstream. Tsuetate Onsen in Oita, Kyushu, has found a use for old koinobori, flying hundreds over the river that runs through town. #kodomonohi #childrensday #koinobori #goldenweek
