I believe marriage is truly a sacred thing if you treat it that way, and these are some of the things I’ve learned. Our partner is a mirror, a reflection of ourselves. All the things that get under my skin are things I haven’t learned to love yet in myself. I’ve learned that therapy is not a service to call only when a marriage is broken. I’ve learned that marriage is filled with opportunities to learn about oneself and how to stand by the important values we have with our partner, and that without challenges, there is no growth. I’ve learned to be selfless and selfish, to lead and to follow, and I’ve learned how conditional love is until we had a kid. The awareness of that continues to teach me so many lessons about how petty or vengeful we can be, and how and why expectations and control can take over. I’ve learned why we hurt and hurt back and all the “isms,” and how sometimes it’s not worth being too serious. I’ve learned that differences are important, but it’s also important to notice the similarities and why we came together in the first place. I’ve learned that each of us change and to not hold on to who we no longer are. To let go of the delusion of “perfect” and understand that there’s no such thing as loving too hard.
