Anchored by a dome-like raffia skirt, topped with a defiant ceramic female torso, and crowned with the artist's signature intricately inlaid rosette motif, 'Las Meninas II' from 2019 has a commanding presence and epitomizes Leigh's unparalleled ability to challenge Western aesthetic hierarchies. Though Leigh has created a small group of other female figures with raffia skirts, only 'Las Meninas II' and its sister work at the Cleveland Museum are uniquely named Las Meninas, a reference to the canonical painting by Diego Velázquez, which critically engages the viewer in the same questions of illusion, power, representation, and viewership that are central to Leigh's work.
