In celebration of #internationalnursesday, we connected with @alexjpavon, a rippin' athlete on our MTB roster and a Surgical Trauma ICU nurse. When she isn't riding slick rock or skiing steeps, she's working to save lives. We asked Alex a couple of questions about what it's like to be a nurse and an athlete.

How has being an athlete impacted your career as a nurse?
Alex: "Bike racing had a huge impact on me going into healthcare. After being a bystander of two tragic accidents at races I immediately took my EMT and Wilderness EMT courses and started working in the Emergency Department--which made me feel much more prepared to respond to emergencies in the backcountry. I decided to go to nursing school because the career fit my lifestyle better than other medical jobs."

Any highlights/favorite parts of being a nurse + athlete?
Alex: "Not only is being a nurse one of the most fulfilling careers, but it also affords me the lifestyle and schedule to continue being the athlete I am at heart. It has also given me a much broader perspective as to what really matters to me. The fact that I can mountain bike and ski, is something I cherish every day."

In what ways does being a nurse affect your decision-making when on backcountry missions?
Alex: "Being a nurse has made me more conscientious about the decisions I'm making when I'm out in the backcountry skiing or biking. Every day I see the consequence and aftermath of severe musculoskeletal injuries, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injuries. By no means does this deter me from doing the things that I love like mountain biking and skiing, but I definitely think a bit more about what I'm doing before I do it nowadays."

What advice do you have for people doing adventure sports?
Alex: "Your fate is largely up to you when it comes to participating in adventure sports. I always encourage anyone participating in adventure sports to take a wilderness first aid course or a wilderness first responder course and recertify them often. Also, WEAR YOUR DAMN HELMET!! Your brain is precious and sensitive and very hard to fix and heal. Take care of it!"
