Painted in 1907 in Vilhelm Hammershøi’s apartment at Strandgade 30, ‘The Music Room’ has hung on the very wall it depicts for over three quarters of a century, the apartment having been bought by the grandparents of the present owners in the mid twentieth century.

During the Modern Evening Auction at #SothebysNewYork tonight, ‘Interior. The Music Room, Strandgade 30’ sold for $9.1 million—more than 3X its low estimate and setting a new auction record for the Danish artist.
