What can a photograph tell us? In the case of artist Tony Luciani’s images of his mother Ella, a whole lot. When his then-91-year-old parent snuck into a photo, Luciani (@ynotphoto256) was inspired to begin capturing her spirit and humor on film while she was living with dementia. As he said in his TED Talk about the photo of her holding binoculars: “Mom laughed hysterically at this one. The idea for this image came from an old German film I’d seen — as you can see, what I got instead looked more like E.T.” Luciani reflects on the bond that this photographic series created with his mother — and shares how it’s never too late for caregivers to connect with their loved ones.
