To our friends in the big media companies, it’s not good enough to just do the performative stuff, posting videos saying hashtag BLM and here’s a rainbow emoji for Pride Month. It’s not good enough to stream a non-union special about Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage every May. The reasonable contract the union is asking for has serious and disproportionate implications for Black writers, Indigenous writers, and Writers of Color. Mini-rooms tend to lock out new talent, especially writers from our communities who are trying to break into the writers room. That’s why the WGA has offered proposals to ensure writers aren’t stuck at the same staffing level. This is a once in a lifetime decision point for our industry when it comes to addressing institutional barriers to entry & advancement.
