In ‘Oh, the Farmer and the Cowman Should be Friends,’ visionary London-based artist, industrial designer and architect Ron Arad goes one step beyond design by infusing into a functional work of art a playful dose of American pop culture.

The wall-mounted shelving system is made up of fifty stainless steel forms in the shape of each contiguous state in the U.S. (Michigan and New York each constitute two forms). When installed, the states come together to make a monumental map-like creation measuring close to nineteen feet long and thirteen feet high.

Derived from a song in the 1943 musical ‘Oklahoma!’ that emphasizes the importance of harmony and unity, urging all to embrace a mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence, Arad’s choice of titles for this work may allude to the cultural or political polarity prevalent in the US.
