Yesterday was incredible.
My stepmom is an immense Beatles fan. Truly. All her life. Going to see Paul McCartney in concert a while back gave me SOME insight to her commitment to the band. The band that changed the world. Certainly hers!

Due to fortunate circumstances involving comic + pop culture conventions, I was able to bring Patti, my stepmom, along and take her to Liverpool where it all began for the Beatles. Suffice it to say, memories were made!

We had the tremendous privilege to experience a complete oral-history about each member of the Beatles.
We walked their childhood streets, stood in the hall where Lennon first met McCartney, heard stories we never even knew about! We visited the real strawberry fields which had nothing to do with a “field”, strawberries or psychedelics like I had believed my whole life. Ha! It was a property, really. We walked along and up to the famed Penny Lane bus stop, learned the meaning behind lyrics like “There’s nothing to get hung about” (Lennon’s Aunt used to get “cross” with John for hanging around the “field” (property) where the all girl’s orphanage stood. His Aunt was worried he’d get in trouble loitering. Turns out, it may have gone deeper for John. Analysts suggest It may have been that John felt a bit of an orphan himself considering he’d been given up by his mother ( but not quite abandoned) to his mother’s sister, Mimi when he was about 5 yrs. old)

And then there’s the story behind “Let it be”. I learned the meaning of these lyrics on the sidewalk looking at Paul’s front doorstep. The bedroom windows were right there. I just cried. (You’ll have to take Dale’s tour yourself to get the full story and impact. @daleliverpool ) But I never knew the heartbreaking tragedies and grief John and Paul shared around losing their mothers. Maybe having just lost my mom and knowing how painful it is, as a grown woman, I had trouble imagining how a teenage boy would have felt. It pulled at my heart. I just can’t imagine. Maybe too this bond made their songwriting all the more special, universal, humble by descriptions of everyday life told w rhythm and of rhyme. But most of all, with empathy.
