If you want your photo taken by @photographerhal, AKA Haruhiko Kawaguchi, you’ll have to be vacuum sealed first. In his new series “Flesh Love All,” the Tokyo-based photographer takes people in mundane, domestic settings and shrink wraps *everything*. Whole families, their homes, the plants and trees surrounding them, naked couples in the bath or suspended in a hug.⁠

The plastic is pulled around them before the air is sucked out, distorting people’s features and mashing their faces together. At that point, Kawaguchi only has around 20 seconds to take his shot before they run out of air.⁠

As you can imagine, this is no mean feat. “The whole process [of each photo] takes two weeks,” Kawaguchi says. “I do location hunting first. That is where I decide on camera angles. Then I measure everything on the screen. I then make a drawing from that and create a bag that will cover everything.”⁠

It’s a viscerally claustrophobic sight. But the idea behind it all, he says, is to explore the unique pull of love and connection. “Love is a very mysterious thing,” he says. “For me, the important thing in my work is not whether or not the couple is wrapped, but whether or not they are united.”⁠
