After over 200 years of slavery in the United States emerged Black entrepreneurs like Ottawa W. Gurley. Born to formerly enslaved parents, Gurley is one of the founders of Greenwood, the all-Black district in Tulsa, Oklahoma, also known as “Black Wall Street.”
Greenwood was a flourishing community for Blacks to prosper amongst themselves. 10,000 Black residents could live, play and worship in the most thriving Black community of its time. What happened to the town is beyond tragic, but today I celebrate Gurley and the great people of Tulsa, who triumphed and turned the poison of slavery into prosperity by creating this town!
