#OTD in 1950, thousands of North Korean troops crossed the 38th Parallel into South Korea, beginning the Korean War. Over the next three years, more than 150,000 #Marines would serve in Korea, battling the North Korean People's Army and their Chinese allies.
From the breakout at Chosin Reservoir to the amphibious landings at Inchon, Marines displayed exceptional bravery and valor throughout the war - 42 Marines and 5 @usnavy Corpsmen earned the #MedalofHonor for their actions in Korea. Marines also adopted new technologies, including helicopters and flak jackets, that would help shape how the Marine Corps approached combat in subsequent conflicts.
As the first major combat engagement of the Cold War, the Korean War demonstrated the commitment of both the United States and the United Nations to support their democratic partners and allies. Troops from 23 UN countries fought alongside the South Koreans until the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed and the armed conflict ceased on July 27, 1953.
