On a collection of YouTube accounts, blogs, and subreddits, people thank Smith for accompanying them through depression or addiction, for making them feel less alone. “He’s been saving me for over 20 years,” one comment reads. Friends and family of Smith remember his vulnerability to the world. “He could be swamped by his feelings, like a kid wearing a shirt several sizes too big,” Jamie Fisher writes.
