In Paul Rusesabagina’s first interview since his release from a prison in Rwanda, the hotelier-turned-dissident spoke about how he was lured back to Rwanda and jailed, and why he plans to disregard an agreement to stay quiet.

Rusesabagina, 69, is the hotelier whose heroism in the face of the genocide in 1994 inspired the Oscar-nominated movie “Hotel Rwanda.” He was captured in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, in August 2020, and began two and a half years of imprisonment that brought international scrutiny. Rusesabagina was tortured and denied medication, he said, then charged with terrorism and sentenced to 25 years in prison in a trial that drew global condemnation.

Rusesabagina broke his silence despite his release and having written a letter seeking a pardon from President Paul Kagame last year and promising to retire “in quiet reflection” if released. “They expected me to be silent. To be a good guy and behave,” Rusesabagina said last weekend at his home in a gated community in San Antonio, Texas where he moved his family in 2009.
