Video by @bertiegregory | Whale poo is critically important to the health of the planet. Why? It turns out that their poo is rich in iron and other essential micronutrients that phytoplankton (microscopic plants that are the basis of the ocean food chain) need in order to grow. More whale poo means more phytoplankton; more phytoplankton means more krill; more krill means more whales; more whales means more poo; and the cycle continues. During the whaling era, humans hunted many populations to the brink of extinction. Thanks to protection, today many whale populations are starting to recover. This is good news not only for marine ecosystems but also for the planet as a whole. As whale poo fertilizes the ocean boosting phytoplankton numbers, these tiny plants capture carbon just like trees on land do. Incredibly, whales are a critical ally in our fight against climate change. Follow @bertiegregory for more good news wildlife stories.
