Phoenix, Arizona has experienced unprecedented heat in recent weeks, with high temperatures soaring above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius) for 19 straight days. This breaks the modern record of 18 days set in 1974. While temperatures are always high here in the summer months (July typically averages a high temp of 106.5 degrees Fahrenheit (41.4 degrees celsius)), this streak is part of an alarming trend of record-breaking heat across the globe this year.

We created these two videos of Phoenix to highlight just how many more people are living with this oppressive heat, versus past years. The city is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States, gaining over 3 million residents between 1980 and 2020, and is now home to a population of 4.6 million. Last month, however, the state of Arizona restricted future home-building in the Phoenix due to a lack of groundwater, based on projections showing that wells will run dry under existing conditions. This first Timelapse clip shows the southeastern part of the city, including the communities of Gilbert, Mesa and Chandler, while the second shows the entire metropolitan area.
