With ancient origins, the festival’s true purpose remains a subject of speculation. Some believe the flooding served as a means of cleaning the streets and shops, while others associate it with combating the plague during the 17th century. There are also claims that it was meant to remove the excrements of pack animals in the summer, particularly in times of drought.

Since 1982, the Water Festival has been celebrated with a mechanical flooding method, utilizing an ancient stone barrier. The event features various engaging activities, including the renowned “one bucketful” tradition, where locals and visitors playfully cool off by drenching each other with buckets of water throughout the city streets.
