Photos and videos by Yael Martínez @yaelmtzv | I live in Guerrero, Mexico, where I was born. This story of Indigenous families impacted by global events is also my own story. It began as an essay on resilience. I wove a complex tapestry of family, religion, ritual, longing, migration, and what it means to live facing these issues as an Indigenous person. The people I photographed have legal citizenship in Mexico but ancestral citizenship in ancient states that exist today in language, food, faith, stories passed down, and a collective understanding of the boundaries that define the world. Those who leave their land live with a divided heart—with the eternal hope to return to the places they love—and thank their loved ones gone, longing for the time they shared.

In these photos: Joséfina Prudente Castañeda, an immigrant from Guerrero, volunteers at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Brooklyn, New York, where she broadcasts a program in her native Mixtec language.

Los Jales de Tlapa is a commercial center where people from different Indigenous communities in the mountain region of Guerrero meet.

Members of the Aldama Alvarado family at home in Guerrero. Every weekend, they speak to relatives living in the Bronx, New York.

At a village cemetery in La Concepción, Mexico, family members visit the cross raised in honor of Carmen Sierra, a beloved matriarch.

Leticia Luna Alvarado is among family members from Guerrero who emigrated to the United States more than a decade ago. She lives in New York and earns a living cleaning homes. Her son was born in the U.S.

Family members who emigrated from Guerrero spend time together at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York.

The videos show the outcome of Yael Martínez’s process of pinpricking printed photos and shining a light through the holes.
