These spaces have “powerfully disrupted the unjust socioeconomic logic that recreation is a luxury that poor people couldn’t afford and didn’t deserve,” Airea D. Matthews writes. They also provide children opportunities for creative agency and emotional growth. “There,” Airea says, “the children know they are free.” As a Philadelphia native, @aireadeefam knows the power of these public spaces. She moved back to the city after two decades away — this time, bringing along her four children. Together, they have found community through city camps and recreation centers.
