Philadelphia has long been committed to fostering community in public spaces. Starting in the 1880s, the city has provided public baths and swimming pools, playgrounds and parks, recreation centers, camps and clubs for its residents. These spaces have “powerfully disrupted the unjust socioeconomic logic that recreation is a luxury that poor people couldn’t afford and didn’t deserve,” Airea D. Matthews writes. They also provide children opportunities for creative agency and emotional growth. “There,” Airea says, “the children know they are free.” As a Philadelphia native, @aireadeefam knows the power of these public spaces. She moved back to the city after two decades away — this time, bringing along her four children. Together, they have found community through city camps and recreation centers. The photographic work of Adrian Eli René, Airea says, captures the joy of “young people at play and at ease with one another” throughout Philadelphia.
