The 1917 lithograph ‘A Stag at Sharkey’s’ is considered the most significant of the set, featuring boxers entangled in combat at Sharkey’s, a private bar and athletic club across the street from Bellows’ apartment.

Bellows’ boxing depictions remain some of his most recognizable work, simultaneously celebrating and satirizing athleticism, masculinity, and American culture, and in a long legacy of printmakers used his graphic work as a vehicle for acute social critique.
