This week I look at Motherhood and how highly different experiences of it profoundly affected the work of two very different photographers ; Diane Arbus and Gertrude Käsebier . One created highly romantic idealistic versions of Motherhood and the other created almost heartbreaking and painfully stark images that seem to search ( at times literally) for the love and tenderness that the photographer was so deprived of as a child . Motherhood is a vast subject and to some joyful and to others full of injustice, rejection and unrequited love.
In Diane Arbus’ case her eventual suicide left the legacy of emotional pain for both her own mother and her own children.
