Video by @bertiegregory | A population of Antarctic killer whales known as B1 uses an extraordinary strategy to hunt seals resting on ice. Working as a team, the whales create a powerful breaking wave to wash their target into the water. However, when the piece of ice is too big to wave wash, they create a subsurface shock wave instead, which shatters the ice into small pieces. After this pod had successfully pushed this Weddell seal into the water, a pair of humpback whales arrived to disrupt the hunt. No one knows exactly why humpback whales interfere with killer whale hunts and attempt to save another species. Scientists think it could be because killer whales prey on humpback whale calves, and by disrupting a killer whale hunt, humpbacks are weakening their predators. Read more at the link in bio.
