Ontake is Aburagi Birin, a forest of 300-year-old trees. Among the nationally owned forests of the Kiso Valley, Aburagi Birin is particularly well preserved. The name Aburagi comes from the Hinoki cypress that grow here. The cores of their branches burn like oil, so they were called oil trees, or Aburagi.
