The first high school seniors to apply to college since the Supreme Court’s landmark decision on race-conscious admissions are trying to sort through conflicting guidance.

On a Friday in July, 87 teenagers met in Rochester, New York, for a five-day workshop hosted by PeerForward, a nonprofit that helps promising students from low-income communities apply to college. Two weeks earlier, the Supreme Court had declared race-conscious admission programs across the U.S. to be unlawful, and no one knew what that would mean for these mostly Black or Latino students.

Some students in the workshop wanted to discuss their race in their applications. Others weren’t sure if it would now count against them. These applicants, and many others, are living in a swirl of uncertainty, confusion and misinformation about an admissions process that has suddenly been made more opaque and bewildering.
