“I don’t think he’ll be afraid of heights,” says Glendon Good, holding his 9-month-old son in his arms as a gondola lifts them to the top of a sheer cliff outside Sedona, Ariz. The ride—3 minutes and 14 seconds at slightly more than 45 degrees—takes them to the house he shares with his wife and their son.

When he purchased the 5-acre, split-level property in 1999, Good got a bargain price of $262,500, he tells @wsjrealestate, because “no one thought you could build on the cliff.”

Completed this summer, the house is visible to anyone driving on the Red Rock Loop Rd., about 3 miles southwest of downtown Sedona. But back in 1999, when he acquired the land, Good was focused on the acreage at the bottom of the cliff. There, he built a house and a studio in which he ran a business making metal furniture and sculptures.

Determined to do the work on the new home himself, Good hired professional mountain climbers to train him on how to lower himself down from the top of the cliff—where he attached ropes to rocks or tree trunks—and up again. Then “every day for three weeks I was up here hanging from a rope and attacking the rock with a big Bosch hammer drill.”

A big surprise of Good’s design is that, while most of the house’s windows overlook a valley, a few face directly into the cliff just inches away. They are almost like framed photographs providing close-up views of natural formations.
