Dan Q. Dao recalls the cultural influence that the Vietnamese variety show “Paris by Night” had on the Vietnamese diaspora, particularly the youth, for four decades. The show was created by Tô Văn Lai, a teacher and member of Saigon’s artistic avant-garde, who produced records for Vietnam’s legendary southern divas like Thái Thanh. Created in 1983, Paris By Night boomed in the ‘90s and early 2000s, and helped to introduce Vietnamese culture to a new generation of Vietnamese Americans.
