"My Anxious Self"—the largest exhibition of the Japanese artist Tetsuya Ishida’s work ever mounted in the United States—is on view at Gagosian, 555 West 24th Street, New York. In an essay for the new issue of "Gagosian Quarterly," the show's curator Cecilia Alemani (@ceciliaalemani) contextualizes Ishida’s paintings against the background of a fraught era in Japan’s history and investigates the work’s enduring relevance in our own time. To read more follow the link in our bio.

The piece is an excerpt of Alemani's essay in the exhibition catalogue, which also features an introduction by Michiaki Ishida, a foreword by Larry Gagosian, an essay by Diethard Leopold, and “The Red Cocoon,” a short story about a surreal metamorphosis by award-winning Japanese writer Kobo Abe.
