The reality is that people living with dementia still face stigma and discrimination. That’s why this Dementia Action Week I encourage you to learn a little more about dementia and take a few simple steps to help create a dementia-friendly future for all everyone. My mum Pauline was diagnosed at age 46 with Fronto Temporal Dementia (FTD) and over the next six years I watched her health slowly deteriorate. She passed away at age 52. My Mum’s diagnosis impacted everyone in my family. It’s very difficult and isolating watching watching the person you love most battle dementia and my relationship with Mum changed over those six years. It was extremely hard to talk about it because I didn’t know anyone else my age going through something similar. I believe it’s important to let people know that there is help out there for them, their families and their carers. I also hope that by continuing to share my story it might help someone feel less alone and help families recognise the early signs of dementia and seek support. This Dementia Action Week, you can help to create a dementia-friendly future. Advocate for dementia-friendly initiatives in your local community and use Dementia Australia’s resources to contact your local council.
