This action shot is exactly what our group hoped to record, and on our second day, we hit the jackpot. My photography workshop was based almost entirely on small fishing boats as we scouted the sloughs and river banks for jaguars, birds, giant river otters, and capybaras. Since we were in boats we hand-held every shot, so high ISO and fast shutter speeds were the norm for many situations, especially if the subject was in the shade of the dense tropical vegetation. We shadowed this female jaguar for over an hour as she hunted the river's edge for potential prey. The jaguar’s diet consists 70% of caiman, and she did not disappoint us. The caiman like to sun themselves during mid-day and as a result, the jaguars are often seen hunting in broad daylight.
