since I’m documenting this process on stories I figured I’d share here too for reference! I’m planning out the front garden beds at our house. I decided to just buy one or two of each plant to see what space they take up, how they look, if they’ll get enough sun where I put them, etc. Here’s what I’m going with so far.

1. Italian Cypress - we have a beautiful old tree on the left front side of our house, so I wanted to balance out the right side with something that would grow tall. we’ll have to keep them pruned cause cypress can grow to be 30 feet tall, but I’d like them to be around 15 feet eventually.

2. cosmos - I’m going to sprinkle these around the garden for a bit of color and movement.

3. Deer Grass - love the texture. there’s a house in my neighborhood where they have this planted around an oak tree and I love how it looks, so I’m copying and planting them around the base of our tree.

4. Olive shrubs - these do very well in Southern California and I love how big and bushy they become. one of favorite plants.

5. Rosemary - I also just love how rosemary looks and that it will grow vertically so it will add some varying height to the garden. doesn’t hurt that I can always use it for cooking when need be!

6. Silver Sheen - this one is kind of scrawny but it was what they had at the nursery yesterday so I grabbed it. I am going to plant these along the house to create a hedge wall.

7. Bacopas - the cutest, prettiest little cascading plant I’d never heard of! I’m planting these along our fence line to drape over the curb down to the sidewalk!

I’ve also ordered several Japanese Anemones to plant around our fence line, and some white roses for the garden bed to add another floral up there. What are your thoughts? Suggestions?

ps. one tip: I pretty much was able to gather all the info I needed to create this plan by walking around my neighborhood and snapping photos with the plant identifier app PictureThis. it gave me all the info I needed on how temperamental each plant is, how much sun it needs and what they were called if I didn’t know!
