The world is so very hard to understand sometimes. I will never understand why someone would do this. A man in his 60s has been arrested by officers investigating the felling of the world-famous Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland, police have said.
The tree, next to Hadrian’s Wall, was cut down overnight between Wednesday and Thursday in what detectives have called a “deliberate act of vandalism”.
It was made famous in a key scene in Kevin Costner’s 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and was among the UK’s most photographed trees.
I worked on a story about #RomanWalls for @ナショナルジオグラフィック and spent a few weeks on or around Hadrian’s Wall. The iconic landscape that is Sycamore Gap, didn’t make the edit for the story, it was to easy a picture to shoot, like a nice sunset. It was destroyed this week for no reason, a view that gave an unknowable number of people joy. Millions of pictures have been shot of this tree, I am very happy I have my own. #natgeo #hadrianswall #sycamoregaptree
