I captured the integration of Webb’s instruments and iconic mirror segments at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, in Maryland. I then followed the assembled telescope to the Johnson Space Center, in Houston, and later witnessed its final integration to the spacecraft bus and sun shield at Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach, California. The last leg of my Webb saga took me to the European Space Port in Kourou, French Guiana, where I documented the launch campaign. In these images: Webb’s optical element after successfully completing a hundred-day cryogenic test inside NASA’s historic Chamber A, in preparation for the deep chill of space. I was suspended on a lift more than a hundred feet high. Webb technicians and engineers work to close the massive doors on the telescope’s custom shipping container, called STTARS. Webb’s secondary mirror is deployed and reflected in the primary mirror—the first and only powered deployment of this system. The lighting was achieved by illuminating the clean room wall reflected in the mirrors. Before shipping to the launch site, the observatory was slowly tilted into a horizontal position, as engineers and technicians monitored the move.
