Painted at a key moment in Frank Bowling’s artistic output, ‘Moby Dick’ (1981) represents the artist’s consolidation of abstraction after a transition from figuration that started in 1973.
Acrylic paint is central to Bowling’s formalism, and this work incorporates a key technique that followed a chance remark from Leonard Bocour, creator of Golden Acrylic paints, in the 1970s. Bocour mentioned that ammonia was used in the manufacture of acrylic paints to encourage their water solubility, and Bowling began using the chemical in his paint to allow the material to disperse and bleed across the canvas.
This work, which was included in two of Bowling’s recent and most acclaimed solo shows—the Mappa Mundi exhibition and the artist’s retrospective at Tate Britain—will be offered in #SothebysLondon Contemporary Evening Auction, presented in partnership with @Celine, on 12 October. The exhibitions are open to the public in our New Bond Street galleries 7-12 October, discover more at the link in bio.
