They lived 46 million years ago, in present-day Montana, and were preserved in fine silt and clay that settled in a lake and then hardened into shale. Soft-bodied animals like spiders show the best preservation when they were buried this way. When preserved in coarser sediments, like sand, they tend to be damaged and very difficult to see. These specimens help better our understanding of the diversity of ancient life in North America, AND they provide seasonal spooky fossil fun 🎃🕸️ 📷 From the NMNH collections.
