Color, Space, Gesture: Modes of Abstraction Across Decades

Highlighted by unique perspectives from female artists, this season’s 20/21 New York sale series celebrates sensational examples of abstraction, spanning across time and genre, canvasing its evolution, and its continual pertinence.

From the 21st Century Evening Sale, ‘A Thistle Throb’ by British painter Jadé Fadojutimi dazzles with an array of purple hues across a monumental canvas, recalling the deployment of this elusive color by Claude Monet and Helen Frankenthaler. Highlighted in our Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale, Yayoi Kusama explores the hypnotic effects of her most celebrated iconography in her red and white ‘Infinity Nets’.

In ‘Currents of Space’ by Kay Sage, Georgia O’Keeffe’s iconic ‘Tree and Earth’ watercolor, and Joan Mitchell’s 1991 canvas ‘Sunflowers’, each artist offers distinct interpretations of natural forms while exploring varying degrees of abstraction. While Sage’s work on paper explores this theme in conjunction with Surrealism, Mitchell’s ‘Sunflowers’ exudes an uninhibited joy and is a testament to the artist’s creative ambition, as a lyrical and gestural ode to one of the artist’s most beloved muse.
