Once found throughout Tahiti, partula snails were declared extinct in the wild nearly three decades ago when the final 26 individuals known to science were brought into zoos and placed in a cooperative breeding program with the hope of bringing the species back from the brink of extinction. Nearly 30 years later, we are witnessing a conservation success story in the making. Today, more than 6,000 partula snails are living in zoos across North America, and efforts to reintroduce this species back into the wild are underway. Photo taken @stlzoo.
