There’s a tree beside a temple, a pleasurable amble from my home here in Tokyo. One night, decades ago but within living memory, bombs rained down on wooden houses, putting 100,000 civilians to death by fire. Those fires killed this tree, its charred and twisted form preserved to remind us of the horrors of war. #ceasefire
