This ceramic work by Pablo Picasso is part of a curated selection of artworks at the newly reopened CASA LOEWE Omotesando presented alongside our latest collections.

While best known for his monumental cubist or modernist paintings, Picasso created a significant volume of ceramic work from the 1940s through the final years of his life.

Inspired by the beauty and colours of Southern France and the Mediterranean, Picasso returned to the Riviera to visit Vallauris for the annual pottery exhibition in 1946. Struck by the quality of ceramics at Madoura, he would go on to form a friendship and business with the owners, Suzanne and Georges Ramié, who would produce and sell 633 clay editions with Picasso over a 25 year period.

Already a high-selling artist in his day, Picasso enjoyed the ability to make his art accessible to a greater public. His ceramics, utilitarian yet decorated, allowed him to create affordable works in editions that could be purchased directly from the workshop. The exhibited plate is made from an edition of 450 pieces.
