Video by @jaimerojo | Very few insects have captured our collective imagination the way monarch butterflies have. Their migration is an iconic wildlife spectacle—this is the only butterfly known to make a two-way migration, as birds do—and it’s full of dazzling natural history enigmas. The journey crosses Mexico, the United States, and Canada and involves up to four generations, with short northward flights in the spring and summer and a long, 3,000-mile southward migration in the fall. Individuals can travel between 50 and 100 miles a day until they reach their wintering sanctuaries in the oyamel fir forests of central Mexico. How these butterflies, the great-grandchildren of the ones that left in spring, find their way to the exact same trees is an unresolved mystery. Follow @jaimerojo for more stories about our amazing planet.
