Clyfford Still was born on this day in Grandin, North Dakota! 🎂

A pioneering abstract expressionist painter, Still is known for his monumental works that played a significant role in the development of post-World War II American art.

Still's artistic journey led him to explore a unique style characterized by large, jagged forms and bold use of color conveying a sense of raw emotion and existential intensity.

He disdained the commercial aspects of the art world and became increasingly aloof from the burgeoning New York School, to the point of refusing to exhibit for a period between 1952 and 1958. This work dates from after Still left New York permanently for the isolation of a farm in rural Maryland in 1961.
