They have a completely stable environment, so I feel like they're already starting off in a better place than I did. They have advantages and opportunities that weren't my opportunities. Some are seemingly small, like just being able to focus on being good at school and being good people. Every time I see them acting in ways that align with that, it validates to me how we're raising them and confirms to me that they're growing up with hard work and kindness as values. My son was struggling this year academically, mostly because he's young for his class. It was hard for him to transition to school, he just wanted to play. But by the end of the year, they said he would be getting an award. We didn't know what it was. We went to the gathering on the last day of school and his teacher stood up and said, 'This boy is always a friend to every person in the class. He is always kind and helpful, and always makes sure his classmates are included.’ That, to me, was the greatest feeling of success, and I finally had the thought that the things I'm trying to teach my kids are getting through to them. It takes a truly brave person to be kind and not go along with the crowd, and it can be hard work to reach out to other people every day.
