The U.S. incarceration rate is the highest of any nation in the world and a perpetual cycle of arrests and imprisonment has become the norm within many low-income communities. Avenues for Justice keeps kids out of prison in New York by providing counseling, training, education and employment assistance as an alternative. In New York State, the cost for a youth in a juvenile detention center is $353,000 per year. Only about 25-50% remain crime free after their release. In contrast, one year in the Avenues for Justice program costs only $5,200, and has an incredibly high success rate of 90%. 50+ artists contributed with original photography and artworks to PICS FOR THE KIDS.
