A few years ago, I attended a longevity dinner where a scientist had obtained an original book of English birth/death records. I took home a copy of one of the pages (the week of August 29th, 1665), as I was fascinated by the striking volume of entries citing the plague - 6,988 - amidst other bizarre causes of death (lethargy and teeth, anyone?)
At that time, I remember feeling like we had come so far in the world of modern medicine....grateful that society no longer faced such existential threats en masse. One cancer diagnosis and a pandemic later, I stand humbly corrected 😎
So many advancements in the past 350+ years — and yet, still so far to go.
